The empire of Russian names: how Tatars in Kazan are promoting the russification of the streets

The commission for toponymy of Kazan municipality includes 19 people. 15 of these are Tatars. With this ratio, we have 82% of Kazan streets that have Russian names.

By the way, all these 15 Tatars, the commission members, are influential people. There are deputies, officials, scientists, representatives of the Muslim Spiritual Directorate of the Republic of Tatarstan and other Tatars with connections and opportunities. However, all these people are promoting predominantly Russian names and titles on the city map. As if we live not in Kazan, but somewhere in Yaroslavl.

Why? Because these “servicemen Tatars” feel with their asses that they rose to their positions precisely thanks to such behavior: “what would you like to?”
