The average age of a native speaker of the Udmurt language is 52 years

The number of those who speak Udmurt has decreased by 45% over the past 20 years. Only 0.5% of children under 9 speak Udmurt.

According to the EGIDS language vitality scale, if the youngest native speakers are representatives of the older generation, then the language is considered “doomed to die”. The next step – “on the verge of extinction” – is assigned in the case when the representatives of the older generation rarely have the opportunity to use the language.
